Expressing Nature’s Intelligence Through Visionary Art
The American Visionary Art Museum exhibit brings together global earth science researchers and indigenous devoted land stewards. It reflects “the rapidly changing state of our earth while providing insight into the disruption of the delicate balances which permit all life to flourish.”
Above all, the exhibit will help viewers understand and respect the preciousness of our planet. The exhibit focuses on nature’s intelligence, reminding us of the power of pollination, ecosystem balance, and even birdsongs!
“How many of you have ever noticed how happy bird song sounds in spring?” asked American Visionary Art Museum founder and director Rebecca Hoffberger during that video tour, explaining how scientific research has compared growth between seeds exposed to birdsong and seeds that are not exposed to birdsong.
“If you play recordings of these happy spring bird songs, you will find again and again that those seeds will grow exponentially larger … It’s almost as if the birds are like the cheerleaders of nature.”
What Is Visionary Art?
During the museum tour, you also get to see the great visionary artist, Alex Grey’s “Planetary Prayer.”
Alex wrote this excellent definition of visionary art:
“The artist’s mission is to make the soul perceptible. Our scientific, materialist culture trains us to develop the eyes of outer perception. Visionary art encourages the development of our inner sight. To find the visionary realm, we use the intuitive inner eye: The eye of contemplation; the eye of the soul. All the inspiring ideas we have as artists originate here.”
Explore Alex Grey’s world in this special Moving Art video feature with visionary artists Alex and Allyson Grey.

Through a tour of the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors (The Grey’s Art church) the artists discuss, life, death, art, mushrooms, and the mycelial web that weaves the universe together. Grey talks about the power of mycology in artwork.
