Can Mushrooms Save the Honey Bee?

Saving the Bees

We’ve recently teamed up with Biographic, a multimedia magazine powered by the California Academy of Sciences, to document Washington States University and Fungi Perfecti by Paul Stamets‘ fight to save the honey bee using fungal extracts.

As part of this effort, we’ve produced an exciting short film that highlights how scientists have found a surprising new way to fight back. Get up close and personal with these extraordinary creatures that help feed the earth’s population.

National Wildflower Week & Contest

This past Sunday, May 8th was not just Mother’s Day. It also marked the end of National Wildflower Week.

The week was started by the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, Texas, because of the former first lady’s belief that wildflowers “give us a sense of where we are in this great land of ours.”

Reconciling Faith and Climate Change

In honor of Earth Day tomorrow, we have a very special interview for you. We had the pleasure of speaking to Sean Watkins, the social media manager at GreenFaith (a Gratitude Revealed partner!), an interfaith coalition for the environment that was founded in 1992. If “faith” and “environment” seem like a contradiction of terms to you now, just wait to read how Sean and GreenFaith are correcting that notion.

In our conversation, he explains how GreenFaith considers climate change to be a moral issue, and how the organization has brought together people of all religions and spiritualities for this cause. In particular, he tells us about The People’s Pilgrimage, a walk from Rome to Paris prior to the COP 21 climate talks last December.

Plus, he connects everything back to a belief we here at GR hold dear to our hearts: gratitude.

Fungi-Inspired Ideas for Global Wellness Day 2015

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the number one health problem in the world is surprisingly not a virus or a disease – it is depression — which is linked to insomnia, stress, weight gain and a trickle-effect of other symptoms that can spiral into disease. WHO also reports that there are 1.6 billion overweight adults globally and that most of the leading diseases are lifestyle induced. Continue Reading…

An Elegant Solution to Save the Bees

An Elegant Solution to Save the Bees

Excerpt and Video by Paul Stamets

Mycologist, Fantastic Fungi Tribe member, and founder of Fungi Perfecti, Paul Stamets, recently revealed a breakthrough discovery that has the potential to change -and heal- our ecosystem. He proposes that there is a missing link that can dramatically influence bee health, and it’s right under our feet. Yes, it’s mycelium.

In his recent Bioneers keynote speech, Paul takes you on a journey of discovery beginning in 1984, when he first noticed bees from his hives flying from sunrise to sunset for more than 40 days, to a patch of mycelium he planted in his garden. Decades later, when Louie Schwartzberg asked Paul, “Can you help the bees?”, Paul remembered this strange occurrence, which reignited his interest in bees. His talk is a walk on the path of discovery – and may lead to a significant breakthrough in helping bees overcome the so-called Colony Collapse Disorder.
