Losing Rainforests Can Damage The Entire Ecosystem
If the earth could speak, it would say “Urgent! Preserve the Brazilian Rainforest!” As wildfires ravish the West Coast of the United States, it’s easy to forget the wildfires that rage in other parts of the world. The Brazilian rainforest has been particularly affected by wildfires, among many other threats to its biodiversity.
As that brief meditation shows, each rainforest contains a delicate balance of interconnected lives.
A forest is far more than just the plants contained within it. The Brazilian rainforest is home to many indigenous inhabitants and an incredible amount of biodiversity that doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world. Facing threats from deforestation and wildfires, the rainforest is at high risk of disappearing.
There’s a lot to be grateful for, however. Here are some of the organizations fighting to protect and preserve the Brazilian rainforest.
Rainforest Alliance
This organization combats some of the slowest growing threats to the rainforest. When people are impoverished, they will cut down trees and sell their land to feed their families. Instead, the Rainforest Alliance helps people find sustainable livelihoods. It frequently makes donations to conserve forests and partners with sustainable agricultural organizations in Brazil.
Rainforest Action Network
As a frontline advocacy and activism organization, RAN is working hard to preserve the Brazilian rainforest. One of its main tactics is to support indigenous peoples in creating recognized, sovereign territories in at-risk regions. They also help monitor for illegal mining and logging.
Amazon Watch
Finally, this organization takes the lead on legal activism when it comes to saving the rainforest. Amazon Watch provides legal defense for activists and indigenous resisters, as well as monitoring and mapping the situation to provide information. This organization also convenes meetings and workshops to share information with more people.
You can get involved with advocacy at home by spreading the word about initiatives and policies designed to protect the forest. Donate if you can. Don’t look away from this magnificent part of the world that needs our help. Please help us get the message out: it’s urgent! Preserve the Brazilian rainforest!
